Welcome to the Month of February
Math
In Math, we are finishing up counting objects to 10 and writing numbers 1-10. We will be beginning Module 2, which we will be learning about two- dimensional and three- dimensional shapes. We will be describing objects in the environment using names of shapes, and describe the relative positions of these objects using terms such as above, below, beside, in front of, behind, and next to.
Science
In Science, the children will be learning about Properties of Matter. The children will be able to describe objects by variety of properties (texture, size, weight, color, smell, shape, buoyancy and hardness). Also, they will be able to explain the difference between solid, liquid and gas and describe how matter can change from one state to another. We will be learning this through various experiments and hands on activities.
English Language Arts
The children will be working on blending and segmenting spoken words as well as isolating and pronouncing the initial, medial and final sounds in words. We will also be using a combination of drawing, dictating and writing to compose opinion pieces in which the students will tell a reader the topic or the name of the book they are writing about and state an opinion about the topic or book.
Religion
During the month of February, we will be completing our Noah’s Ark stories and will be sending them home. We will also be attending Mass on Ash Wednesday which is February 10th to celebrate the beginning of Lent. Every Wednesday after that we will be collecting coins for our annual coin drive. Each week will be a different coin.
Other News
This month we will be celebrating the 100th day of school and Valentine’s Day; more information will follow for both of these special days. We have no school on February 15th due to Presidents Day. Also, please note that there will be no Ken-ton, Cheektowaga, Amherst and Buffalo busing the week of February 16th. If you have any questions, please check the school calendar or the weekly newsletter for additional information.
